Freedom of the press
Castro has once again shown his desire to limit the freedom of his people. A noted Cuban reporter, Manual Vazquez Portal, 52, who operated an independent newspaper has been sentenced to 18 years in a Cuban prison, basically, for not kowtowing to Castro and attempting to publish the truth, not the typical party line. To add insult to injury, this man was set to receive the 2003 International Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).
Through his wife, he has smuggled out excerpts from his prison log and has had them published in several publications. Viva la resistance!
